After application it absorbs ambient ultraviolet light and converts that energy chemically, breaking down pollutants that settle on the glass, so the surface becomes self-cleaning without reducing the transparency of the glass. Transmission in fact increases, because the nanoparticles smooth out local irregularities that would otherwise reflect light. SurfaShield G is also antistatic, which limits the build-up of sand and dust, and super-hydrophilic, so water cannot form the droplets that scatter light or fog the surface in humid conditions.
